Mr. J and I had a great day celebrating the Valentine holiday. We struggle with spending money and getting gifts for each other so we decided on simply enjoying our time together.
Living in our small 380 sq ft apartment, we don't have much counter space in the kitchen. This makes it difficult for when we want to cook. So, we use the stove as a counter sometimes and thankfully we found a kitchen cart to use as our main counter for prepping our food.
We decided to make a nice breakfast together including crepes, eggs, bacon, and orange juice. A real treat for us!
This was the best picture we got of us :( our lovely good morning faces.
Since we got strawberries for the crepes, I thought it would be fun to dip the rest of them in chocolate. I got a white chocolate baking bar to heat up and dip the strawberries in. It worked well using a toothpick. We let them sit in the fridge for about an hour, then we tested one to see if the chocolate had hardened and I think that was when they all disappeared! SO GOOD!
The weather was SO beautiful during the day. With the good weather and nice warm sunshine, a trip to the hot springs was in order. We had never been there so we put gas in the car and followed the instructions from google. It was a 2.5 mile hike into the Fifth Water hot springs and then there was open camping in the area. When we pulled up near the trailhead it was packed with tons of cars. The parking lot was full and more vehicles were parked along the roadway. I guess everyone had the idea to take a nice romantic hike up to the hot springs for the day :) We found a place to park and it was definitely more chilly than where our apartment was. Jokes on us!! When we got to the trailhead it was covered in ice and snow and everyone was coming down covered in mud from falling and said, "good luck" sarcastically. Our plan was to hike in, pitch a tent somewhere, enjoy the water, then start a fire, but that quickly changed when I realized I didn't want freezing hair at night when I would be sleeping in the cold tent. We went over a bridge and found a few fire pits a ways away from the trail but close enough to the bathrooms and parking lot. We decided to pitch our tent there and then we'd hike up to the hot springs in the morning. Thankfully, we got our tent and sleeping bags up before dark! Jade started gathering fire wood and I pulled out dinner from the cooler.
Once it was dark, I was freezing. We had a hard time getting our fire going and I was miserable. When this happens, its time for bed. I think I was so caught up in the nice warm day we had that I forgot warm heavy socks and new warm clothing to put on before sleeping.
Our wake-up alarm was unexpected and pretty hilarious. We were in a camping spot that had clearly been used multiple times with a nice fire pit and flat grass from previous tents so we thought it was a perfectly fine spot. After a cold night, we were woken up by a forest ranger shaking our tent around 7:30am. Apparently that site is too close to the main road, but we had no idea! He asked if we had drugs or alcohol and Jade laughed and said that we were Mormon and had never used drugs or tasted alcohol. The ranger responded by saying "Well, shouldn't you be in church this morning?" Our church didn't start until 1:00 and we were fully intending to go to church so it was just funny. He made us wake up and break down our tent, so we decided to head home at that point.
It was a long night to say the least and not exactly as planned, but it was still a great trip!
